#1. Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction! Always treat the firearm as if it is loaded. Be aware of where projectile may end up.

Never completely rely on a safety (or a safety decock), it is mechanical and can fail. 

#2. Always keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready and committed to making the shot.

#3. Keep all firearms unloaded until you are ready to use. It is required, by local laws, to keep firearms locked up from unauthorized persons.
